Mr. Yu Heng, the founder of YAF, introduced YAF’s collection and mission and shared his stories of violin collection. After the discussion, the postgraduate students appreciated and studied some of YAF’s violin masterpieces that span two centuries, including the ‘ex General Dupont, Grumiaux’ Stradivari, the ‘ex Segelman, Suk’ G.B. Guadagnini, and top pieces by Gennaro Gagliano, Bernardus Calcanius, Alessandro Mezzadri, Ansaldo Pogg, etc. Mr. Yu Heng introduced the history of the violins and performed some notes to show their playing qualities; Prof. Gao Tongtong taught about the connoisseurship knowledge and answered questions; the postgraduates carefully watched and studied the pieces and got the chance to play on them as well to discover their tone qualities. At last, the students also looked at YAF’s superb bow collection including bows by François Tourte, Dominique Peccatte, Nicolaus Kittel, etc. The two hours’ study has endowed the violin-making students with precious practical experience during their academic careers.
‘Today is a special day.’ Prof. Gao Tongtong said, ‘Yu Art Foundation is an organisation with the top-tier violin collection in mainland China. We are fortunate today, and it is the first time that the CCOM violin-making major postgraduates come visit Yu Art Foundation with me and study its violin collection, which is an extraordinary experience for our students.’ The cooperation between YAF and CCOM in the violin making realm will open a brand new age, enabling more violin making students and professionals to have close-up opportunities to study the top-rate violins, and contributing to the boosting of the academic communication and scholarly progress of the violin making career.
